Clay - Apple Pinch Pot
Description:
For our clay project, we created an apple shaped pinch pot. To do this, we all started with a small amount of clay and had to throw it against the table to release all of the air trapped in the clay. After this step, we shaped our clay into a ball and took off a small chunk to use for the stem and leaf.
With the ball, we slowly worked it with our hands into the bowl shape. We pinched the edges upward to form the walls of the dish. During this step, we also had some water that we used to smoothen any ridges or holes that appeared in our clay.
Once we had our desired shape, we formed both our stem and leaf and attached them to the exterior of the pot. We also used the tools to engrave the four apple seeds into the middle of the pinch pot. The final step in the project was to paint the apple using white, red, brown, and green.
Extension:
One extension that I think would be fun for students would be to have them create their own Christmas ornament using clay. The ornament could be something that represents the students and their interests. Allowing each student to express their own personal style is very important in art, and this type of project allows for a lot of creative freedom for the students.
