Drawing - Night and Day

Description

For our drawing project, we created a two-sided drawing that showed the differences between day and night. First, we diagonally divided our piece of paper into half using a ruler. We did this with pencil and then traced over it with a permanent marker. Next, we were asked to sketch something that made us thing of the daytime on one side and nighttime on the other. I chose to include some mountains, the sun, and a cloud on my side that represented daytime. For nighttime, I drew a moon and included some stars.

After we had sketched our drawings, we traced over them using a permanent marker. For the final step, we needed to use warm and cool colors to help show the distinct differences between the two side of this piece. I used reds, oranges, and yellows as my warm colors and blues and purples for my cool colors.

Extension

I liked this drawing activity and how it showed two very different sides to something - both in the drawing itself and then also through the colors that were chosen for each side. Another activity that is similar that you could complete with your class could be to have them divide their paper into three different areas and have them draw the progression of one season changing to the next. For example, in the first box it could be fall and there might be a lot of bright colored leaves on the trees. In the next box, the leaves may be falling from the trees or on the ground. And then, in the final box there may be snowflakes or even a snowman. These drawings would be a great way for students to recognize what happens in each step as one season is changing to another.
