Van Gogh Collage

 

Description: 

For this project, we created a landscape that is inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night. First, I created a background by using a gel medium to paste down strips of tissue paper. After covering my entire page, I applied another full layer of the gel medium to seal the tissue paper down and give my project a finished look. My next step was to add a landscape - I chose to include mountains, which were inspired by my recent trip to the Canadian Rockies this past summer. Last, I added swirls and several detailed lines using oil pastels that portrayed Van Gogh's style and made my piece of art resemble Starry Night's characteristics. 

Extension Activity: 

For an extension activity that I would do in addition to this activity would be to have my students examine Van Gogh's Starry Night by using all 5 of their senses. I would use this as a descriptive writing assignment for an upper elementary class. Looking at the painting, students would then use descriptive words to portray what they might feel, taste, smell, hear, or see throughout the painting or if they were to be inside the painting.
